ziggler vs corbin
This match was moved to the pre-show. Corbin dominated the entire match and Ziggler stole a victory with a roll up. I said in my prediction post that this would happen, but I also thought Corbin would attack him after the match. Instead, he just stood in the ring looking shocked and disappointed. Pretty lame.
ryback vs kalisto for the united states championship
Before the match, Ryback mocked CM Punk's entrance, which the Chicago crowd absolutely hated. Ryback dominated the match early but came back and wound up getting the win via the Salida del Sol. This was surprising to me, I thought for sure Ryback would get the victory. He did not, he lost again.
Tag Team #1 Contenders Tournament Finals: Enzo & Cass vs The Vaudevillians
There is not much to say about this match, other than Enzo got injured. I thought it was part of the show at first because the WWE showed multiple replays of it, but he really did get injured. The crowd was worried as he was stretchered off. Thankfully, it was revealed later in the night that he suffered a concussion and not something more serious. The match was simply declared over.
sami zayn vs kevin owens
It is extremely difficult to follow up something like that. The crowd was upset due to the Enzo injury, but Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn did their best to get the crowd back and then some. They put on one hell of a match. Kevin Owens got the win via the Pop Up Powerbomb. These two absolutely stole the show.
the miz vs cesaro for the intercontinental championship
The Miz defended his belt against Cesaro in another great match. Kevin Owens was commentary and was claiming that he wants his IC belt back. Sami Zayn wound up attacking Owens which actually cost Cesaro the title. Cesaro had the crossface locked in on the Miz and he tapped out but the referee was distracted by Owens and Zayn outside the ring. The Miz wound up getting the victory via a roll-up and grabbing Cesaro's tights. After the match, all hell broke loose and Kevin Owens laid everybody out. It is safe to assume that Owens, Zayn and Cesaro will all be vying for the Miz's championship.
jericho vs dean ambrose
This was a good match that kind of got lost after the two previous great matches. Jericho controlled most of this match but Dean Ambrose would not give up. Ambrose wound up getting the win and Jericho lost his mind outside the ring.
charlotte vs natalya for the women's championship
Everyone knew something screwy was going to happen when it was announced Bret Hart would be ringside with Natalya to keep Ric Flair from interfering. It would up being the 2016 version of the Montreal Screwjob, with referee Charles Robinson calling for the bell when Charlotte had Natalya in the Sharpshooter. In the end, there was a cool moment with Bret Hart hitting the Sharpshooter on Ric Flair and Natalya locking it in on Charlotte at the same time.
vince mcmahon announces who is in charge of monday night raw
Vince announces that both Shane McMahon and Stephanie McMahon will be in charge of Raw. I was fearful of a brand-split but that was not the case. I'm sure there will be plenty of shenanigans to go around tomorrow night on Raw between these two. I doubt this handshake will mean anything going forward.
roman reigns vs aj styles for the wwe world heavyweight championship
As everybody expected, this match was a circus. First, Roman Reigns gets counted out. Shane McMahon comes to the ring and says that is not how a championship match should end and ordered the match to restart, but with no count-outs. Then, Roman Reigns accidentally hits AJ Styles with a low-blow and is disqualified. This leads to Stephanie McMahon coming out and ordering the match to restart with no disqualifications. Even though this was clunky as hell, it still turned out to be an entertaining match.
Now that the match was no DQ, obviously Anderson and Gallows came out and beat up Roman Reigns. This led to the Usos coming out the level the playing field. There were several moments where I thought AJ Styles actually was going to win, but ultimately it was Roman Reigns who got the win via the Spear. There was no Finn Balor debut tonight, even though that has been rumored for a week now.
