The show kicked off with Shane McMahon making a few big announcements. First off, there would be a match between AJ Styles and Sami Zayn. If Zayn won the match, he would be added to the main event at Payback for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Shane McMahon also announced the start of a tag team tournament to determine the number one contenders to the New Day's championship belts.
Kevin Owens faced off against Cesaro in the first match. Shane McMahon made this match because Kevin Owens interrupted him and demanded his rematch for the Intercontinental Championship. Kevin Owens and Cesaro had a good match, but Cesaro wound up getting the win. Backstage after the match, Kevin Owens confronted Shane McMahon and pretty much said that he was going to beat the hell out of Sami Zayn later in the night. Shane had Kevin Owens escorted out of the arena so that there would be no interference in the AJ Styles/Sami Zayn match.
The Dudley Boyz defeated the Lucha Dragons in a quick match. For the second week in a row, Enzo and Cass confronted them. This is clearly going to lead to a match, hopefully it will take place at WWE Payback. Charlotte defended her WWE Women's Championship against Natalya in a solid match. Before this match took place, guest host Dr. Phil lectured Charlotte on how silly it is to rely on her daddy to cheat for her to win matches. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again and Charlotte was disqualified when Ric Flair interfered. Natalya got the win but Charlotte kept the belt because it cannot change hands on a match that ends in DQ.
The Usos defeated the Social Outcasts in the first round of the tag team tournament. Therefore, they are advancing into the next round. The crowd was pretty disinterested in the match but their enthusiasm picked up significantly once it ended. Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson made their long awaited debut. The former Bullet Club members did not make their debut with Finn Balor, but as a standalone tag team. It will be interesting to see if they join the tag team tournament. The long rumored "Balor Club" may still be happening, but since Finn Balor is the current NXT Champion, the timing may not be right for him to join the main roster. However, Gallows and Anderson can make an immediate impact in the tag team division.
AJ Styles and Sami Zayn had an absolutely terrific match. If Zayn was able to win, he would be added to the main-event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at this month's Payback airing on the WWE network. It was not Sami Zayn's night as AJ Styles was able to pick up the victory. This match was back and forth and had everybody in the crowd on the edge of their seat. It is rare for a match on Monday Night Raw to get that type of reaction from the crowd. Everyone was invested in this match and it's outcome was unpredictable. Even though Zayn didn't get the win, it is clear the WWE universe are fans of his. Sami Zayn will most likely face off against Kevin Owens at WWE Payback.
I've never seen anything like the next segment that took place on Monday Night Raw, but I hope it happens more often. Chris Jericho came out for his patented Highlight Reel segment. He bloviated about the guest he was going to have and just how incredible he was. He then revealed that his guest was indeed himself. Jericho asked questions to himself and then answered them himself. It was ridiculous but very amusing. Dean Ambrose came out and said the Highlight Reel was canceled and was being replaced by the Ambrose Asylum show. This led to a confrontation between the two and Ambrose hit the Dirty Deeds on Jericho. A match between Jericho and Ambrose is almost a certainty for Payback.
The main event was Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns versus Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus. This was another solid match that once again was unpredictable. It is rare that there are so many intriguing matches on a Raw, but hey I'm not complaining. The finish of the match was when Bray Wyatt hit the Sister Abigail on Alberto Del Rio. While Wyatt was pinning Del Rio, Sheamus tried to break it up but was hit with a massive spear by Roman Reigns. The show ended with Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt staring at each other in the middle of the ring. Is this a possible match in the future? Who knows. For now, it seems like the WWE has turned the Wyatt family into faces. However, the WWE has seemingly never had a plan for the Wyatt family so they could be right back to being monsters again next week.
