After another defensive meltdown Sunday versus Detroit, the Bruins bounce back and beat the Blue Jackets 2-1 in overtime. The Blue Jackets are a terrible team, but they have been playing well lately so I guess you could argue that this was a solid road win. If this same game was played at TD Garden there is no doubt in my mind the Bruins would have lost. They simply cannot play at home and it is still driving me crazy. I don't think the return of Adam McQuaid is going to effect this team all that much. Sure, they will be slightly tougher, only until he gets injured again in two weeks.
I've said it all along that this Bruins team is going nowhere and if a measly win over the Blue Jackets has changed anybody's mind about this team then congratulations. The proof is right there, the Bruins beat the lousy teams in the league then fold like a cheap tent when they face real competition. The trade deadline is just around the corner and I'm hoping against all hope that the Bruins' management realize that they need to sell off some pieces and prepare for next year. In my wildest dreams this team doesn't even come close to being a Stanley Cup contender.
Loui Eriksson scored the game winning goal tonight and I sincerely hope that I wake up to news that he has been traded tomorrow. He is not the future of this team and is not worth the contract he is going to command in the open-market. On Sunday, Zdeno Chara was on the ice for all six goals scored against the Bruins by the Red Wings. Please oh please trade Chara. He was a terrific Bruin and was one of the main reasons they won the cup in 2011. However, he is on the decline and would be a perfect second-pairing defenseman on a cup contender. Brett Connolly and Jimmy Hayes have pretty much done nothing all year and they still get a ton of ice-time. It is time to develop the younger players on this roster, yet the Bruins insist on sending them down to Providence.
It is hard to feel good about this Bruins team, in fact I feel like they are wasting time. Claude Julien is a terrific coach but he is not the best coach for developing younger players. He simply doesn't play them when they make mistakes. What is the point of this season? What was the goal? To make the playoffs then get spanked by real competition like they have been all year? Yippee, the Bruins defeated the Blue Jackets. It is going to take a lot more than that for Bruins fans to forget Sunday, the game against the LA Kings, the game against the Anaheim Ducks and the embarrassing loss at the Winter Classic. Please, sell at the deadline Mr. Sweeney.
