I don't have the El Ray network so I never even thought of watching Lucha Underground. I've heard so many good things so I had to finally find a way to watch. Well, you can now stream Lucha Underground so fantastic, problem solved. I'll have to go back and watch season 1 because I had no idea who anybody was and I'm sure there is a ton of backstory I'm missing out on.
The main thing I loved about Lucha Underground was the viewing experience. That sounds vague, but in general it is just awesome to look at. The camera angles are incredible and the color tone or filter they use makes it look unpolished in a good way. It looks gritty and feels gritty. It is hard to describe, it is something you need to sit down and see for yourself. Every move just feels more impactful just by the way it is filmed. Also, the audio is incredible. The chops in the first match between King Cuerno and Fenix were unbelievable. I thought my speakers were going to blow out. That match itself was also incredible. Again, the talent of the performers in the ring is totally enhanced by the way the show is filmed. King Cuerno wins and is the new "Gift of the Gods Champion". What an awesome name for a title.
I'll say it again, I did not watch the first season so I don't know who Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico are. I've been living in my WWE bubble for too long and this certainly was refreshing. I can't remember ever witnessing a match like the final two matches of Lucha Underground. Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico are booked in triple threat match by Catrina, to determine who will be the number 1 contender for Mil Muertes' Lucha Underground championship. Ivelisse is a woman, so my WWE brain kicked in and immediately was like "what the hell is this crap?". I honestly thought she would be in the corner of the ring while Son of Havoc and Angelico beat the hell out of each other (side note: Angelico's outfit reminded me of the video game Jet Set Radio Future for some reason). I was wrong about Ivelisse's involvement in the match. She got the crap kicked out of her and kept coming back and actually won the match.
The title match then happened immediately after that. Mil Muertes, a gigantic, Shredder from Ninja Turtles looking badass facing a very talented female wrestler. My mind was blown. This wasn't some gimmicky bullshit match, it was an actual match. Again, Ivelisse was getting tossed around the ring and even kicked the shit out of the massive Mil Muertes. This is just so out of the ordinary from the wrestling I watch regularly, I loved it. Eventually Muertes gets the win. The show ends in chaos. Prince Puma shows up and beats the hell out of Muertes and then Pentagon Jr. shows up and breaks his arm. It was fucking madness and completely awesome. As for the video segments in between I had little to no clue of the significance of them, but I was still captivated. This is a completely different way to produce a wrestling show and a breath of fresh air for someone who usually just watches the WWE.
