If the Bruins sign Loui Eriksson to a contract extension, it will be a massive mistake. Why fire Peter Chiarelli if Don Sweeney is going to make the same mistakes he did? Eriksson is a good player but is absolutely not worth 5 year, 30+ million dollar contract.
Peter Chiarelli was ultimately shown the door because of over-valuing marginal players and handing out long-term deals to them. This limited the Bruins maneuverability almost every trade deadline and prevented them from offering any substantial deals to pending free-agents. Oh, and Chiarelli was also fucking awful at drafting and traded away Tyler Seguin for some poop and Loui Eriksson. Thank goodness the Bruins got rid of Chiarelli! Surely Don Sweeney won't make the same mistakes that Chiarelli did. Everyone thought that and out of nowhere Dougie Hamilton was traded to the Calgary Flames.
Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Dougie Hamilton, but the pattern concerns me. Do skilled young players that play an offensive game just not fit into the Bruins system? If Kevan Miller fits into the Bruins' system, but Dougie Hamilton does not, well then change the friggen' system. I thought Don Sweeney was going to approach things differently, yet he resigns Adam McQuaid to a multi-year extension. For what? The guy is always injured and is essentially the same player as Kevan Miller, only less of an ass-hat.
I'm really starting to get nervous that the Bruins are going to extend Loui Eriksson. Is it simply for pride? Just to say we traded away Tyler Seguin and got Eriksson back in that deal. The book has already been written on that trade. It was a colossal fuck-up by the Bruins and one that may have set the franchise back a couple of years in their quest for another Stanley Cup trophy. However, don't make the problem even worse by extending Eriksson. He is a very good player and this year will most likely be the best of his career. He has a history with concussions and is by no means a central player on a team that is actually contending for a championship. This Bruins team is in no way a Stanley Cup contender. Even with this garbage Eastern Conference this year, I can't imagine in my wildest dreams the Bruins making it past the second round. The Bruins need to make a play for the future at this trade deadline. Quite simply, it would be insanity if Sweeney and the Bruins extend Erikkson in the next couple of days.
