Well, that sucked. For months the city of Boston was anticipating the Winter Classic. How could you not? It was a dream matchup, the Montreal Canadiens vs the Boston Bruins. However, what took place yesterday at Gillette Stadium was not a hockey game, it was a complete beatdown. In Montreal and Boston everyone already knew that the Canadiens were the better team, yesterday a national audience got to see it.
The setting was beautiful, the entire state of MA was hyped for a hockey game. Instead, they got a bunch of guys thankful that they were wearing a black uniform because they shit their pants in front of 70,000 people. Claude Julien dressed up as Patriot's coach Bill Belichick but unfortunately their must of been some kind of a miscommunication and the Bruins played like Belichick's Cleveland Browns. Ha.. get it? They sucked is what I'm saying.
I can't really figure out if the Bruins are a good team or not. They are still most likely going to make the playoffs and losing the Winter Classic isn't the end of the world, but holy shit it felt like it. It is always the same complaint with the Bruins, they are too slow. Montreal is a fast team capable of scoring more than they have exhibited this year, so the fact that they seemingly were always in possession of the puck should come as no surprise. However, you would think the Bruins would at least play an inspired game.
The Bruins are in a bit of a pickle here because it seems impossible for this team to win a Stanley Cup with this roster. It is just good enough to make the playoffs, but that seems to be the ceiling. Without a trade, I don't think it realistic to expect a legitimate cup run out of this roster. Their depth is questionable at best and they are in desperate need of a top defenseman. Sure, losing an outdoor game with everyone watching isn't the world, but getting embarrassed should re-open the eyes of many Bruins fans that this team is quite flawed. Even with missing both Krecji and Marchand, the effort put forth by the Bruins on New Year's Day was disheartening. Congratulations to Montreal to coming to Foxboro and soundly beating the Bruins. It appears you don't have to poke the bear after all, you can simply skate around it.
